DJ DMX Controller

DMX means Digital Multiplex and is a standard for digital communication and lighting networks. Each run of DMX cables connected (with lights), can handle 512 channels of DMX, or one universe. If you need more than 512 channels, you’ll need to expand on your hardware.

Do I need a DMX controller?

The short answer is no. You will be limited in your ability to control your lights. It is possible to connect a group of DMX fixtures without using a controller if you set them all to sound-active or automatic mode. Since they are all connected to each other, this will allow them to sync up to create an automatic light/effect show. My first lighting rig was homemade “people in the day had lower expectations of what is possible.” I used a small garbage can with a hot water heating element that I would heat the water and drop Dry Ice in fog. I Had salvaged a Neon Sign controller to use as a chase system for the spotlights, and a mirror ball that I made using a balloon that was inflated, then covered with paper-mache, popped, and cover with small mirrors. These were all triggered with flip switches. Times have changed.

How to choose a DMX controller?

There are three DJ DMX controllers I would consider as a DJ just starting out in the business. KISS method is the most likely method. “Keep It Simple Stupid.” My Grandson says “inappropriate” with the use of that phase but you understand. So many when starting down the path to doing something think that more is better. More is not necessarily better it’s just more.

The Chauvet Obey 3 is one of the best controllers for just starting out. It allows you to control the RBG this allows you to try different light settings to see which may be the most appealing for your show.

The ADJ-12 Channel is also a great controller for those starting out in the DJ business. This controller has twelve channels that let you control your lighting environment to a better degree. It is very lightweight and compact.

Elation SDC12 12-channel Basic DMX Controller has the same functionality as the other two listed above it’s mostly dependent on your preference.

There are a whole group of lighting controllers that are manufacture specific so make sure the controller you choose will work with DMX light fixtures.

How does a DMX controller Work?

DMX (Digital Multiplex) is a protocol used to control devices such as lights or fog machines. The signal is unidirectional, meaning it only travels in one direction; from the controller or first light, all the way to the last. In its most basic form, DMX is just a protocol for lights, like how MIDI is for keyboards or DAW controllers. To understand what DMX consists of, you need to know about lighting modes, DMX channels, and DMX controllers.

DMX-compatible products will have different modes of operation such as sound-active mode, 4-channel mode, 7-channel mode, etc. The modes available will vary based on the device and will be explained in your product’s user manual. It is possible to connect a group of DMX fixtures without using a controller if you set them all to sound-active or automatic mode. Since they are all connected to each other, this will allow them to sync up to create an automatic light/effect show.

The best DMX Controller

As time goes on you will want to upgrade your lighting equipment. I would start with an Apelab W-APP V2 app for your smartphone using two Ape Labs Trifecta light fixtures. This will allow you to appear that you have a bigger light show than you do. These fixtures are very small, lightweight, and potable.

The Ape Labs Trifecta is an all-in-one lighting solution. Consisting of three Coins, three 10-degree lenses, and a CoinBank, the Trifecta is great for room washing or short throw accents. Combine with a battery pack and wireless remote to make the feature completely hands-free. Combined together, the Trifecta offers over 24 million color scenes that can be created to fit any scene.

Almost all lights are wireless Bluetooth these days and battery-powered so make sure that you check and test everything before you set off to your Gig. This also allows you to place the lights where you want and need them because you are limited by power cords and the placement of electrical oulets.

Conclusion

Remember you are the person that sets the mood for any venue. People are looking to provide a safe upbeat fun atmosphere, helping them to celebrate a given occasion. People will love the fact that you have lighting if it is done right. So my advice to you is to practice. Practice a lot to make look as though you have done this for a lifetime. Make their event as seamless as possible. Fewer moving parts will simplify your setup and break down times. Will have less exposure that things will go wrong. “And They Do Go Wrong”. Make sure you set your client’s expectations to match your ability and do not oversell what you have to offer. You only once to make a first impression. Please, Please, Please set your price accordingly. You say this is a basic show that is why you are getting such a great price.

Please get information about the various systems before you buy. Stay away from less than professional lights because they will make your show look cheap if you don’t.

The last thing I will leave you with is to have fun. If you not having fun in what you are nor will your audience be having fun. Preview the location that you are to be doing the Gig at just to make sure that you have a good idea before you get there where to place lights and sound equipment.

If you are going to grow your business via referrals doing a small show right will get far more business than bombing with a big show that people will only remember the mishaps
