DMX Lighting Controllers

Digital Multiplex, DMX, is the standard for digital DJ communication and Professional lighting systems. DMX cables are connected (with lights) and can handle 512 channels of DMX or one universe. You can expand if you need more than 512 channels.

Do I need a DMX controller?

The short answer is no. You will only be limited in your ability to control your lights. It is possible to connect DMX fixtures in auto mode. They are all in a chain to each other, allowing them to sync up to create an automatic light/effect show. When the DMX Light Fixtures are connected, sync up to create an automatic light/effect show.

My first lighting rig was homemade “people in the day had lower expectations of what is possible.” I used a small garbage can with a hot water heating element that I would heat the water and drop Dry Ice in fog. I Had salvaged a Neon Sign controller as a chase system for the spotlights and a mirror ball that I made using a balloon, then covered with paper-mache, popped, and covered with tiny mirrors. These were all triggered with flip switches. Times have changed.

How to choose a DMX controller?

There are three DJ DMX controllers I would consider as a DJ just starting in the business. KISS method is the most likely method. “Keep It Simple Stupid.” My Grandson says “inappropriate” using that phrase, but you understand. So many, when starting down the path to doing something, think that more. More is not necessarily better; it’s just more.

The Chauvet Obey 3 is one of the best controllers for starting. It allows you to control the RBG, enabling you to try different light settings to see which may be the most appealing for your show.

The ADJ-12 Channel is also a great controller for those starting the DJ business. This controller has twelve channels that let you control your lighting environment to a better degree. In addition, it is very lightweight and compact.

Elation SDC12 12-channel Basic DMX Controller has the same functionality as the other two listed above; it’s primarily dependent on your preference.

There are a whole group of manufacturing-specific lighting controllers, so make sure the controller you choose will work with DMX light fixtures.

How does a DMX controller Work?

DMX (Digital Multiplex) is a protocol used to control devices such as lights or fog machines. The signal travels in one direction; it only travels in one order from the first light to the last. MIDI is a basic form of communication, just as MIDI is for keyboards or DAW controllers.

Various modes of DMX operation, such as 7-channel mode, 4-channel mode, and sound-active mode, will have tour clients on the dance floor all night. The methods vary based on the device and your user manual. Use can use DMX light fixtures without a controller when the fixture to automatic mode or sound-active or automatic mode. All lights are connected, allowing them to sync up to create an automatic light/effect show.

The best DMX Controller

As time goes on, you will want to upgrade your lighting equipment. I would start with an Apelab W-APP V2 app for your smartphone using two Ape Labs Trifecta light fixtures. This APP will allow you to appear to have a bigger light show than you do. In addition, these fixtures are minimal, lightweight, and potable.

The Trifecta from Ape Labs is an all-in-one lighting solution. It consists of CoinBank, three coin lights with three 10-degree lenses. With the Trifecta, your room washing will be at the next level or along with short-throw accents. Feature utterly hands-free with a battery pack and wireless remote to make the feature completely hands-free. Combined, the Trifecta offers over 24 million color scenes that can create to fit any setting.

Almost all lights are wireless Bluetooth these days and battery-powered, so make sure that you check and test everything before setting off to your Gig. Checking the lights also allows you to place the lights where you want and need them because you might be some distance from power cords and the placement of electrical outlets.

Now that you have a good idea of what DMX will do for you and your clients. Ask other DJs to aid you in the decision-making process and review YouTube videos and press reports.

Conclusion

Remember, you are the person that sets the mood for any venue. People are looking to provide a safe, upbeat, fun atmosphere, helping them celebrate a given occasion. People will love that you have lighting when done right. So my advice to you is to practice. Practice a lot to make you look like you have done this for a lifetime. Make their event as seamless as possible. Fewer moving parts will simplify your setup and break down times. Will have less exposure that things will go wrong. “And They Do Go Wrong.” Make sure you set your client’s expectations to match your ability and do not oversell what you have to offer. You only once to make a first impression. Please, Please, Please set your price accordingly. You say this is an essential show, that is why you are getting such a great price.

Please get information about the various systems before you buy. Stay away from less than professional lights because they will make your show look cheap if you don’t.

If you are not having fun in what you are, nor will your audience be having fun. Preview the location you are to be doing the Gig at to make sure that you have a good idea before you get there where to place lights and sound equipment.

If you are going to grow your business via referrals doing a small show will get far more business than bombing with a big show that people will only remember the mishaps.

How you run your business and perform your GIGs is up to you but remember, the client has the last word.
